Star Trek: ADD

Man-oh-man I can't believe that I didn't hear about this until now.

Me and Ex-B always talk about how awesome the whole Star Trek and Trekkie thing is, y'know, on a level like "dude, the ultimate thing a guy who made up stuff could do would be to make up something that did that kinda awesome thing for so many people."

To even do something that did a little good like that would be awesome.

To think the complete opposite about the whole thing or even just to have no appreciation for it at all and think you could trade it in for something better is really hard to get my brain around heh.

Like, yer talking villainy or idiocy on a scale that I can barely imagine.

And I happen to be pretty damn good with villainy and idiocy heh.

I mean, even if, for some totally insane reason, you were gonna try to do something like that, you should keep that part of your plan on the down-low ahaha.

Does Star Trek really need a larger audience?

Is that really what you think the problem with Star Trek is lately?

I mean, OMFG, everybody I know except for the little kids who can't sit still for thirty seconds likes Star Trek, even if they ain't Trekkie-Class Fans or anything heh.

Well, up to Next Generation at least, not all the newer "edgy" junk, although Seven of Nine was smoking hot in that otherwise tiresome Voyager show, and that Vulcan chick from that horrible-ass Enterprise show was blisteringly hot.

And not everybody likes the old Star Trek where Kirk was somehow allowed to keep captaining a ship full of souls that he would occasionally risk gambling away on a wrestling match with an alligator man (but there's a lot of us that liked those ones because Kirk was somehow allowed to do exactly that over and over again ahaha).

But whatever, you know what I'm saying!

Okay, okay, mebbe I don't even know what I'm saying exactly heh.

But that vulcan chick was definitely hot, man, that's for sure, I woulda never been able to sit through the couple of hideous-ass Enterprise episodes that I did manage to sit through if it wasn't for that ahaha.

Brain

My favorite scifi movies are Alien and Aliens, even above Star Wars and 2001 (and definitely far above the other Alien sequels, even though none of 'em totally sucked or anything, they just definitely don't deserve to be put above Star Wars or 2001 and a bunch of other things I'm probably forgetting).

I could blabber for at least two days straight about all the different reasons I think Alien and Aliens are so great, maybe more, now that I think about throwing out a few details as examples, that's one big freaking onion to start peeling back the layers on, Ridley Scott and Cameron are two geniuses, who studied all the scifi (and other assorted) geniuses that came before 'em, all of which had teams and teams and teams of maybe-not-so-famous but just-as-important geniuses helping 'em with the ten million billion moving parts that go into making something really great, y'know, like Kubrick had Clarke and all the guys who did the special effects, and Lucas had Ralph McQuarrie, and John Williams, and that awesome sound effect guy, and blah blah blah blah blah.

So I'm not gonna even try to peel any of that humongous ass onion back all-at-once and just sorta wander around in it and randomly type out all the stuff I find poking around in there, its an Abyss of Awesomeness that I know I lack the gravity to get to the bottom of, a little brain like mine could stare into something like that with my Appreciation Machine cranked to the max and I'd still never get to the end of even one of those hallways.

And there's a helluvalotta hallways there, man.

And so I can't really just say "one of the great things about Aliens was..." because just jumping in there and grabbing one thing and focusing on that and going off on how great it is would seem sorta misleading, like I reached in and picked it out because it was the main thing about Aliens I like, or something like that, when there really ain't one main thing I think is more important than all the other things.

Aside from the idea that there ain't one main thing I think is more important than all the other things.

Which is what I just decided to talk about without having to type a lot heh.

Anyways, when you got something like that in your brain, you can't just sum it up easily, its an amorphous and non-verbal kind of understanding.

But on the other hand (for some strange reason) it seems pretty easy to take something else, and run it through that model of Aliens you have in your head, and traverse all the mental hallways and compare the two things, and get a nice short list of all the things that don't measure up, or places where the thing you are comparing it to is missing important parts, and stuff like that.

And when folks make up game ideas, I think they start from a familiar context or a framework of their favorite games (and bits of movies that are sorta like games, and amusement park rides, etc), mebbe stripped down to its bare bones and essential bits, if they're smart, and then they start building something up from there.

And then the audience comes in and runs that idea against the amorphous blob-like mental model they have in their heads from their favorite games, and they get the list of all the little (and maybe not so little) things that don't jive, all the differences and deficiencies and stuff, from their perspective, and they report that.

Sometimes the frameworks they are using don't match up well, y'know, 'cause folks have all sorts of different experience sets, but in general, its okay, its just the way we do it, smart folks who have played this game a lot can compensate for those "favorite game context" differences anyways, by boiling ideas like "I always play a ranger in these games" down into the constituent parts that make up "the idea of being a ranger" and what you are really saying when you say "you should always be allowed to be one" until they find some common ground, so that they can make you happy.

Or whatever, you know what I'm saying

And from the critic-slash-audience side, we adjust to compensate too, I mean, we aren't just a bunch of dicks, when we look at your idea, we try to find some context from our Funnest Gaming Moments that matches up with whatever you are talking about, and start from there.

And sometimes the thing you are talking about reminds us of something else that we've done before that we really didn't like, and things break down right in the beginning.

That happens all the time.

And there's a cure for that kinda breakdown, when a guy can explain the Fun Gaming Experience he had that we obviously didn't have, y'know, and draw us a picture of what we missed.

But that can take a lot of work to get at, sometimes, with the way we all have these gigantic amorphouse blobs of non-verbal half-understood genius-level things in our heads, and the way we need to describe 'em and map 'em out slowly by following a single line of thought at a time.

'Cause we think and communicate in series, one word at a time, traversing one mental corridor at a time, exploring one layer of the onion at a time, we aren't capable of downloading the huge amorphous blobs of understanding to each other in parallel and shit, and that always leads to all sorts of important things not getting mentioned and confusion and errors in the communication stream send us rolling down completely differerent corridors in completely different armorphous blobs of understanding sometimes.

And whatever.

Much like what would happen if I tried to unroll the onion of "why I like the Alien movies."

As if I even had the mental capacity to completely understand everything all the guys who built it (and all the guys that those guys were influenced by) were consciously (and semi-consciously, and unconsiously) shooting for, which I don't.

I mean, I think I'm pretty great, but even I don't think I'm that great heh.

I think my brain would have to be the size of a couch or something to do that shit.

Oh, my brain is HUGE, don't get me wrong, I have a HUGE and superhumanly awersomes cranium, it just isn't that huge ahaha.

Its definitely not huge enough to store the brain of even one other genius in here and still have enough room leftover in RAM to operate the motor skill programming that's required to open a bag of Doritos.

And that's if I do it with my teeth ahaha.

So whatever, we do one thing at a time, and we put up with the never ending buildup of errors that occur because we can't do anything all-at-once.

But the one error we don't have to put up with is the idea that we could do it all at once, and all the errors that come from that, like the idea that I'm somehow capable of loading all the important thoughts that ten thousand geniuses thought into my RAM without some kinda killer compression technique that would destroy like 95% of the data and still leave me quivering on the floor in a pile of my own smoldering nerve endings and steaming drool heh.

That's where a good mental database with secondary memory storage and quick traversal shortcuts and pattern recognition compression and everything comes in ahaha.

Cowboy Versus Giant

You Gotta Shake It Baby

Ahhh I just finished spending a bit of time over here at the Jumpgate Evolution place, poking through fansite interviews and reading dev blogs and soaking up spacesim junkie nostalgia on their forums, all of which was pretty interesting.

Like, here's a guy that really loves these kinda games man, holy shit, its almost like poetry for spacesim junkies or something heh.

I mean, its so totally over-the-top fanboy and earnest that you can't help getting sucked into it with him, the guy is like, giving us a Captain's Chair View of all the helmet-cams on our Colonial Space Marines as they investigate some Alien Wreckage or something ahaha.

Reminds ya of that "first glimpse" of Vanguard we got from those Fire of Heaven guys, don't it?

And this is kinda neat in a strangely poignant way AHAHA.

None of that "its a game industry standard for there to be a transition from a development team to a live team" kinda crap over there at all for some reason hmmm heh heh heh heh.

Sure, the focus of the game seems kinda light on features but whatever man, things ain't real unless you can play 'em, y'know, ain't no sense in arguing over the subtle difference between this and that in the Intergalactic Landscape of Imaginary Land ahaha.

And then there's the thing Dundee has been working on over here.

Which is some kinda thing where you are an anime chick who fights succubi in space or something.

And that's about all the meat I could find to pick at.

But going on the assumption that's its the guys that did Jump to Lightspeed, and the twenty seconds of video, you'll be able to run around outside (and maybe inside yer ship) in that game, y'know, like, beam down to a planet and wrestle with aliens or something.

Or beam aboard the hulk of a ship you crippled and salvage stuff out of it or man the stations on multi-user capital ships and totally kickass possibilities like that.

Y'know, the junk they had all the crap to do in SWG, but didn't do, for some reason.

So I do gotta weigh that kinda potential coolness against the whole "magical demons in space" and anime-stink-of-it I guess, heh.

Even though they really didn't seem to be interested in showcasing cool hype machine feature stuff like that on their totally inferior website, compared to Jumpgate Evolution, y'know?

I mean, c'mon, you gotta get some forums over there at least, jeeze looeeze.

Oh and don't gimme that Raph crunk about how you are trying to advertise your company and not a game or something, apparently super geniuses aren't aware of a little thing called FOCUS ahaha.

Hey, there's only nine guys building and moderating the forums and doing everything for Jumpgate Evolution man, so one of you dudes is gonna have to put on a couple extra hats and pick up some of the PR and marketing weasel spin slack or something already, y'know?

I had a hard time even finding your website with Google, I mean, I had to remember the name of Spacetime Studios to get there, 'cause there's a lot of "Blackstar" stuff out there with Mos Def and the Trobbits and stuff, and then I had to click on some links that didn't look quite right and hope they were the right thing (and they were, but yeesh man, I'm tempted to take a screenshot of what it looks like on Google, its so bad ahaha).

What the hizzle is up with that shizzle?

I thought you were some kinda webmastery guru or something man c'mon wtf AHAHA.

Oh, you may think I'm being mean, but when my brother's six year old son told me about his idea for a Spacegame called "Star World" I was all like, "dude, that has gotta be the worst name for a game I've ever heard in my entire life, man, that sounds like some poodoo that George Lucas woulda made up, I mean, c'mon, seriously, Star-World makes absolutely no sense, you gotta get it together, baby" ahaha.

P.S. Might wanna get rid of the smiley face emotes that are front and center on the main page of the company website, y'know, not that I'm an expert on professionalism or anything, but I'm pretty sure that although it might make you seem "friendly" or something, it's not the kind of thing that inspires confidence with investors and shit AHAHA.

P.P.S. Even if you guys ain't doing anything, you should just make up a lotta shit about pie-in-the-sky features you are "currently working on," y'know?

And then just tell folks they had to be yoinked at release or whatever because they were too buggy or something.

Y'know, just like everybody else does it, man.

Now that's a Gaming Industry Standard if there ever was one! AHAHA.

I mean, this is like the absolute worst time you could've ever picked to suddenly decide to be all honest about shit and stuff ahaha.

Plus making up pie-in-the-sky hype-machine drooly-awersomes uber-feature shit like that is totally fun to do, man.

Fancy Sammiches

Sometimes the cheapest and nastiest version of a thing really is the best version of a thing.

That's definitely true in the case of Ice Cream Sammiches.

The cheapest Ice Cream Sammich in a store is always the tastiest Ice Cream Sammich in the store.

Its just one of those rare things that started out in a perfect state back in the cowboy times when they were first invented or whatever, they just can't be improved upon, any little thing you'd try to change about them would be an instant disaster.

I mean, there's always something seriously wrong with the Fancy Versions of Ice Cream Sammiches, y'know, like, the breading ain't mushy enough or the Ice Cream ain't smushy enough and so it don't ooze out the sides of the sammich all wrong and force you to lick the wrapper or the wax paper its wrapped in is too fancy and waxy and it don't get soggy enough for you to accidentally eat a little bit of it and so you never find out how much fun it is to chew Ice Cream Sammich Flavored Wax Paper.

Anything you could think do to that perfectly awesome mess of sticky lick-yer-fingers-and-wash-your-face-afterwards sensory data would just tone it down somehow or make it tamer and less fun in some way.

You don't want that boney-ass Fancy Ice Cream Sammich made by that Aunt you got that goes around pretending to like kids just because its the "proper" thing to do.

Fancy Ice Cream Sandwiches just don't get it, man.

Some things were just meant to be disgustingly awesome and nasty heh.

U GOPT KILED ROFLS

So... anybody wanna play SWG with me?

C'mon, we'll have the whole place to ourselves!

I'll even let you drive the Obi Wan Space Station Wagon!

Or that newer version of it that tilts all crazy that only has one working brakelight!

Bet they haven't fixed that yet!

Wonder if they still have that Nude Bug?

Boy its hot out here in the desert of Tatooine.

Mind if I take my pants off?

My legs are all sweaty.

Don't worry, we all come equipped with tighty-whities in this game!

Heh heh heh heh heh.

Goddam, I wanna play some kinda non-sword-n-orc game but there ain't a lot to pick from.

There's the Matrix, but I done that as far as its gonna go.

And there's uh, Eve Online, but I don't wanna play a game where I gotta just sit around and wait for stuff, I wanna get somewhere when I play, y'know?

So that pretty much rules that one out, unless we can get the admins to give us the cheat codes or something, which is a distinct possibility heh.

And then there's that new Richard Garriot Tabernacle Rasta game, which seems kinda cool but it doesn't let you move your UI around yet because the Creepy King is too busy preparing to go into outer space for real to fix that kinda lame-n-earthly problem shit ahaha.

And they ain't got Mechs yet, just the Promise of Mechs.

Which is better than no-promise-at-all, which is what it seems like you get with that UI problem heh.

"OH MY GOD THIS GAME HAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL THERE'S HARDLY ANYTHING ELSE TO IT!!!"

I mean, seriously, how hard is something like that UI thing to fix?

Maybe an hour of work.

And that's if you are high on something when they ask you to do it heh.

That seriously doesn't bode well for my impression of the combined technical aptitude of The Team ahaha.

I bet it would be fun to play for a little bit anyways, though, y'know, the maps look really good, at least, it kinda reminds me of Autoassault, which really was a fun game, at least for a little while, even though it didn't look like it was gonna be.

And they got that Alphabet Soup Magic Puzzle game we could play in there that teaches you Richard Garriots Alien Language and gives you special powers that aren't anything like the Force from Star Wars *rolls his one good eye*

Prolly wouldn't cost us nothing either, they got some cutting-edge-game-dev-idea "friend-key" system, we'd just have to suck up and make some friends with people who actually bought that game, pfft, that's easy, those guys are prolly starved for friendship heh.

Welp, there goes that plan, sorry ahaha.

Let's see, what else is there.

Oh no you don't, nothing with that Anime shit innit, man, I gotta draw a line somewheres, I can't just have you drag me into some Bottomless Abyss of Suck where our hair turns blue and wavy and our eyes get all big and cute and we just fall into the Suck forever and ever and listen to lame philosophical stuff that makes about as much sense as the lyrics to a Def Leppard song or anything anybody said in the sequels to the Matrix while bunny ears grow on our heads ahaha.

Man, at least SWG has spaceships we can actually steer AHAHA.

Yah see, its like, if you like scifi, you are totally fuxxored as far as this MMO stuff goes, wut iz up wit dat!

How can there be guys that say stuff like "oh, that orc stuff is so lame."

What the hell game are they playing that doesn't suck worse than the million billion orc games?

I musta missed something.

Maybe they play City of Heroes, that was pretty fun, I mean, its not scifi, and it got boring about as quick as Autoassault, punching thugs out over and over again until blood came out of your eyes, but it was pretty fun.

Superjumping around on the buildings was really great, though.

Meh, I don't wanna do that again.

So c'mon everybody!

Let's play some SWG!

Or that Tubba Lava game!

Or let's get the admins of Eve to give us the cheat codes or whatever!

Or even Anarchy Online, with its weirdo graphics from 1982!

"Nice helmet!"

"thx!"

We just got so many options here ahaha.

Edit: Oh man, the Collector's Edition of Tumbler Rumbler is going for 14.99!

Dude, at that price, it isn't even worth it to go through all the crap you'd have to go through to make friends with somebody just to get one of those cutting-edge Friendship Keys for free heh.

Plus, the Authentic Scarf and Hand Painted Pencil Sharpener or whatever you'd get with that is prolly worth at least that much ahaha.
